Common Poker Tells

Eye movements. When poker players get good hole cards, like pocket aces for example, generally, they take a longer time looking at their cards. Some unknowingly do these because they just couldn't resist seeing these types of cards in their hands, after all they are very hard to come by. Eyes do tell a lot, that's why many poker experts have turned to wear eyeglasses or caps to hide their eyes during tournaments.

Trembling hands. This is a classic poker tell because many poker players couldn't hide their excitement or nervousness when they get excellent cards, so their hands shake. A player who has been calm during the pre-flop is dangerous when his/her hand shakes at the sight of the flop. It might mean his hand has just gotten a pair or better.

Pretentions. Poker players who seem uninterested in a round might just be acting so that you will not read that he/she already has a three-of-a-kind. Likewise, those who intimidate others by raising and re-raising may just very well be bluffing and just trying to eliminate as many possible competitions as he/she can.

Arrangement of chips. Tight poker players stack their chips in an organized manner while aggressive ones just pile them in sloppy stacks. At the start of the game, observe your opponents' chip-stacking behavior, so you will have a better clue what type of player they are.

Facial expression. Watch for any changes in the facial expression of other poker players, because they tell a lot. A player's expression can change from obviously happy to extremely frustrated, especially during the end when there's a lot of pressure. Most not-so-experienced poker players cannot handle that much pressure and break in the end. The more-experienced players are better in keeping a poker face - one that is expressionless - all throughout the game.

Although tells will help you in your poker games, they are not really to be much depended upon. Some of these mannerisms are insignificant. One more thing, poker players can even reverse these tells so that they mean the other things, just to confuse you. It is advisable that you do not concentrate too much on studying tells, there are other skills you must learn to be able to win at poker consistently.
